The Scottish Kingdom (Gaelic Rìoghachd na h-Alba, Scots Kinrick o Scotland) is an independent state of northern Europe that existed from 854 to 1707. Its borders changed throughout history, but eventually it came to occupy the northern part of the island of Great Britain and shared a common border with the Kingdom of England. In 1603, King James VI of Scotland became King of England, uniting the states in a personal union. They were not a single power, remaining independent kingdoms that had a common monarch. In 1707, with the adoption of the Act of Union by the English and Scottish parliaments, the two kingdoms formed one - the Kingdom of Great Britain. With the conquest of Berwick by England in 1482, the territory of the Kingdom of Scotland began to correspond to the modern one - from the east it was washed by the North Sea, from the north and west by the Atlantic Ocean, and from the southwest by the North Channel and the Irish Sea. Apart from the north of the island of Great Britain, the Scottish kingdom included 791 islands.
