A forest is an ecological system, a biocenosis in which trees are the main life form.

The forest is an integral part of nature, the concept of "forest" can be considered at different levels. On a global scale, this is part of the biosphere; on a local scale, it can be a planting. The forest can also be considered as a natural-zonal subdivision, as a provincial subdivision, as a forest massif (Shipov forest, Shatilov forest, Black forest), as an ecosystem. Forests occupy about a third of the land area, the forest area on Earth is 38 million km². Of these, 264 million hectares, or 7%, were planted by man; by the beginning of the 21st century, man had destroyed about 50% of the forest area that previously existed on the planet. Half of the forest zone belongs to tropical forests. Areas occupied by trees with a crown density of less than 0.2–0.3 are considered light forests.
