Dead or Alive (デッドオアアライブ Deddo oa Araibu; abbreviation DOA) is a fighting video game series developed by Tecmo's internal studio, Team Ninja, under the direction of Tomonobu Itagaki. The first game in the series, Dead or Alive, was released in 1996 as an arcade game (Sega Model 2 platform). Subsequently, it was ported to the Sega Saturn and Sony PlayStation game consoles, and also received a number of sequels for arcade machines and consoles.

A feature of the games in the series is a special physics engine responsible for bouncing the breasts of female characters when performing movements. Tomonobu Itagaki decided to implement a similar effect as an eye-catching feature, taking the idea from the 2D fighting game Garou Densetsu. Home versions of the first game in the series had an option to disable this effect.
